A Contemporary Lifestyle
Carrying on their main concept of combining colours, embracing diverse cultures, and eccentric designs, founders Mariam Fathi and Sara Sayyar continue to introduce to the Kingdom a charming collection of furniture and home accessory items that enliven any home environment. Launching their retail store in Bahrain’s well-known Seef Mall, Babushka offers its customers a range of contemporary designs, which are usually “one-offs”, in which every piece gives its home a sense of originality with its distinctiveness and character. Mariam and Sara spoke to Perle Magazine about their new retail store and the how they chose to design their store in a manner that reflects the core essence of Babushka.
Keeping in mind the idea of being able to reflect the character and depth of their concept, the founders were inspired by a variety of design aesthetics and integrated a combination of décor styles comprising of industrial, classic, cultural, and contemporary elements that provided an overall cosy atmosphere, allowing the customers to feel at home from the minute they walk into the store. Starting their journey from Riyadat Mall, they say their aim was always to be able to grow the business and relocate. They note that finding their beginnings in Riyadat Mall set their foundations strongly as they were able to progress in their business at low risk, as well as assess their competitors, market position, and potential of growth. Essentially, they add, their main incentive to relocate was to be able to have a bigger retail and storage space to be able to introduce their eclectic range of products, enhance their product lines, and be accessible to the local community as well as the visitors from across the GCC.
Opening officially on May 28th 2016, with a soft opening on April 21st, Babushka was designed by the design house Datum, by Interior Designer Mohammed Janahi. Mariam and Sara worked closely with the design house to ensure their vision was transferred into a reality, and within four months from designing, they were able to see their dream completed. “The response has been great so far. We have been receiving a bigger number of customers from Bahrain and the GCC. Thankfully, the feedback has been very positive and encouraging”, they added.
Located on the Ground Floor of Seef Mall, in the Jewellery section, the store is home to a generous mix of items that provide an insight into Babushka’s evolution with each collection. They currently offer a wider selection of products in the store, as well as their old designs, which are constantly being innovated to better suit their customers’ tastes and current market trends. Some of the items present in the store include chairs, sofas, benches, dressers, cabinets, consoles, cushions, frames, mirrors, lamps, candlesticks, ottomans, pouffes, and carpets amongst many other home accessories. “We have noticed a demand for such secondary products,” they said of the customers’ requests for home accessories, “it was recommended by our customers to fill that gap mainly to be sold as gifts or to complete an overall living space.” Babushka also introduced new fabrics and styles into their work to appeal to different consumer preferences.
Striving to always provide an element of savoir vivre through their products, both Mariam and Sara constantly work on creating new pieces, and aim to adapt to their ever-evolving customer needs and preferences, and manage do so by expanding their product mix. Working with more diverse decorative home furniture designs, experimenting with eccentric fabrics ,as always, and working towards expanding their home accessories products range, Mariam and Sara ensure their customers are always able to access fresh, unique, and exclusive products from Babushka. “We constantly innovate, listen to our customers’ needs and recommendations and customise to their requirements, to better suit their homes!”
