When Bahraini fashion designer Reem Buqais took part representing The Kingdom of Bahrain as a delegate in the “Ship for World Youth Leaders Program” in Japan last year, the inspiration she attained from it’s heavily enriched culture, unconventional yet traditional architecture, and serene nature was indescribable.
Due to that indescribable moment, Buqais contacted Bahraini studio artist, and friend Ramah Al Husseini to pursue in a joint collaboration, and to attain a combination of both art, and fashion; basically creating garments that are a representation of wearable art forms for the Spring Summer 2016 season.
From tops with obi like wraps, that refer to an essential factor of a Geisha’s formal attire, to the linen pants with Sumo printed motifs, created specifically for the collection by Al Husseini, every aspect of the collection had a significant approach towards the culture. Taking that into account, despite Buqais’s minimalistic, and delicately intertwined attempts, that surely meshed well with the art motifs, I would have to say that I was more enthralled by Al Husseini’s art pieces.
From mixed media pieces, to the linear details that were added by black ink, each piece was a prominent ode to Japan. Illustrations, and works of art based on green tea, delicate hair ornaments, the crucial involvement of cherry blossoms, samurai and geisha affairs, to the delicate involvement of a reincarnated origami pigeon.
It was truly as if these works of art, and attire pieces were shipped in a Tansu (A Japanese term used for trunk) and crossed borders to our pint-sized, bright island. If you’d like to purchase any of the pieces by Reem Buqais, or the works of art by Ramah Al Husseini kindly just contact each individual on the following:
