Through the Indo-European undersea telegraphic cables, Bahrain was able to establish its first telecommunications link to the rest of the world in 1864, and was the only medium of communication until nearly a century later, when in 1931 radio links had started to operate. It was not until 1981 when telecommunications were officially launched in Bahrain with the founding of the Kingdom’s first ever telephone company, Bahrain Telecommunications Company, or better known as, Batelco. Becoming a household name in a short span of time, Batelco quickly expanded into operating in 14 countries.
