Bahrain comes to life at Al Basta Market
WORDS BY ANAAM IKRAM
With the first edition of Al Basta Market having been launched in 2013, the market since then has proved to be an immensely popular platform for Bahraini families and businesses to share their talent and it has therefore grown considerably in the two following editions.
Al Basta, is the largest shopping festival in Bahrain organised by the Southern Governorate in collaboration with Tamkeen and a number of local and international partners such as Bahrain Noor Al-Ein Festival, Bahrain National Gas Company, National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD). The Market offers traditional Arabic vendors offering an array of products and services to anyone who attends. There are a wide variety of products from shoes, bags and clothes to accessories, traditional souvenirs and even food. To further give life to the Al Basta Market, traditional live music is played for the public to enjoy while browsing through the numerous colourful and traditional stalls.
When the first Al Basta Market was set up, it was on 500sqm and was only able to accommodate 15 participants. The market turned out to be such a huge success that the following year, in 2014, Al Basta Market 2 required to be set on 9000sqm with 50 stalls set up for 400 traders who displayed their products on a weekly rotation basis, so as to give everyone an opportunity. For the third edition of Al Basta Market – which started from December 20 2014 and will last till March 28th 2015 – the project has expanded even more allowing more than 75 stalls of boutiques, perfumes, accessories, plants and food outlets, giving opportunity to about 700 participants. These stalls are all managed by individuals, families and small to medium enterprises, encouraging Bahraini talent to step forward and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity which not only allows them to share their talent but also share their culture and values with others.
The third edition to the Al Basta Market is to further ensure the efforts that are being made to develop the agricultural sector and all other sectors related to it. These efforts are put forward by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Al Khalifa, the Present of the Supreme Council for Women, with Governor of the Southern Governorate Shaikh Abdullah Bin Rashin Al Khalifa. The Governor also expressed his appreciation for Sheikh Nasser, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport, stating that for the second time this event is taking place under his patronage only goes to show “his keenness to achieve its goals, including empowering Bahraini youth in every fields, and supporting owners of micro-, small- and medium-sized-enterprises through helping them to market their products.” Al Basta Market enables traditional designs and creativity to combine and to be presented an in an outlet for free. The participants benefit greatly by being able to promote themselves and further market themselves through the project’s blog, reaching and educating as many people as possible about the local talent here in Bahrain.
The Al Basta Market is located at the Bahrain International Circuit, opens every Friday to Saturday from 2pm-9pm and is open to the public.
