Bahrain Summer Festival
With the summer in full swing, the Kingdom rejoices with a an entire season of fun-filled activities for the entire family.
With the hotter season upon the Island, it is common for many to travel abroad to spend their summers in foreign lands, but for those who remain in the Kingdom, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has launched an exciting summer program for families to enjoy and make their summer a memorable one on the island. Starting from July 7th till August 7th, BACA offers an exciting mix of educational activities and performances bringing attendees closer to the culture, heritage, and spirit of Bahrain.
What does the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities have planned for the kids during the summer holiday?
The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) offers periodic activities and festivals throughout the year that provide the public with a variety of cultural opportunities.
This year we commemorate archeology, as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s history extends over 5 millenniums with successive civilizations being based on this land. In line with “Our Year of Archaeology”, the 9th edition programming of the Summer Festival will aim to promote and educate audiences on the topic whether it be the Dilmun, Tylos or Islamic eras, the famed legends of Gilgamesh, the forts and in the more recent past the remains of the pearling trade. This will be presented through hosting workshops and activities at the Nakhool tent which are at once educational, exciting, and fun for the entire family in an attempt to create more awareness among children and young people about the importance of the history of our country and the richness of its’ cultural elements.
Aimed mostly at families who remain in the country during the summer, what kind of different activities can they look forward to be a part of to highlight their summer?
The Bahrain Summer Festival attracts not only the Bahraini and expatriate families in the country, but also attracts a wide range of visitors from different Gulf countries and tourists who come to the Kingdom of Bahrain as a distinctive summer destination. This year we offer a variety of events covering art, culture, music, theater, technology, cooking and much more.
At the Nakhool tent, our team of instructors and volunteers are a group of talented young Bahrainis who offer educational and recreational workshops at the same time provides children with an opportunity to spend an enjoyable time learning useful skills. In addition, the festival showcases artistic and musical performances that give the festival an additional dimension of fun and entertainment.
The participation of children and their interaction with the festival’s activities is the most important element of our success.
How does this year’s program differentiate from previous years?
Held annually since 2009, a key aspect of the Summer Festival is the Nakhool tent, which features all the children’s activities. The tent has been traveling yearly from town or village to the next in order reach different communities and expose children to a variety of interactive cultural activities. For example, in 2009 the tent was in Malcheya, 2016 it was in Sitra. This year Bahrain Summer will be located Near Qal’at al-Bahrain Site, to highlight an important archaeological site, which is also aUNESCO World Heritage Site. The design of the tent is unique this year with several domes each highlighting a specific theme.
Our visitor attendance has been increasing yearly from 25,000 in 2014 to 66,000 in 2015 to 71,500 in 2016 and we are expecting even more visitors this summer.
This year, our Nakhool tent workshops, will be divided into different weeks. Each week will focus on a particular theme: Science, Technology, Arts & Crafts and Music & Theatre. We divided the month into 4 different themes to create diversity in the workshops presented to the audience and to triggerthe participant’s interest. We hope to have the kids return to Nakhool tent every week, if not daily to learn and enjoy from the variety of workshops on offer the daily live performances as well as our interactive games and competitions on the main stage.
What is the Young Inventor’s Corner and within that what kind of activities will children be able to engage in?
This corner is one of our favorite! We hope that both children and adults invent and discover with our interactive workshops. We call it, “Creative Studio” and it includes many collaborative and exciting activities and experiences that enhance the participant’s creativity while giving them the chance to discover new ideas and creations. They will also get the opportunity to experiment and practice math and science.
We believe one of the best ways to learn is through active learning. Nakhool tent “Creative Studio” offers a series of innovative workshops in cooperation with BAPCO on the following topics Renewable Energy, Chemical Safety, Hygiene, Security, Safety & fire and much more.
We hope to see you and your children learning and creating with us!
What is the Kid’s Library and Storytelling program?
The aim of the Kid’s Library and storytelling program is to encourage children to read and to tell stories in an interactive way with the participation of their parents. We are calling this the “Children’s Cultural Cafe Corner”! In this section of Nakhool tent, we not only have storytelling activities, but we will offer children and their parents’ workshops where they too can learn how to become storytellers as storytelling is truly an art and a long-standing tradition in Arab culture. We have also invited young writers to share their stories and read from their own work and share their experiences.
We have also planned to include several cultural events during the month in the “Children’s Cultural Café Corner” that will not only get the kids excited to read and learn more but the parents as well! We have a library of more than 300 children’s stories that the kids can enjoy reading on their own as well!
For the Kids Performances, what kind of performances will there be?
We have two venues for performances during this year’s Bahrain Summer Festival. The Cultural Hall’s stage will showcase exciting and fun performances as well as the Entertainment Dome at Nakhool tent. The performances will include magic shows, puppet shows, music and dance activities. In the Entertainment Dome, children will not only watch these performances, but will be able to actively participate and learn about musical instruments, theatre and puppets. The performances will be announced closer to the date.
What will the Musical Performances consist of?
The musical performances consist of family shows, plays, and concerts at our two venues, both the Cultural Hall as well as Nakhool tent’s Entertainment Dome.
What is the duration of the summer program and where will the activities be taking place?
Bahrain Summer Festival is a month long, which will run from July 7th to August 7th 2017. We have two venues this year, the Cultural Hall by the Bahrain National Museum, which will have the large family oriented shows, performances and concerts. The second venue will be Qal’at al-Bahrain Site where we will have Nakhool tent, a city full of fun, exciting and educational workshops, performances and activities for children from the age of 3 to 15 years old.
The concerts will be announced closer to the date, please stay tuned on our website and social media channels. (@BahrainSummer &www.bahrainsummer.bh)
Will families have to pre-register before attending the events? Where can they purchase tickets from?
We welcome families to the Nakhool Tent daily as entrance is free and open to the public. Visitors and participants can register for particular workshops and activities online at www.bahrainsummer.bh or can register at the registration desk located in front of the tent. As for the performances at the Cultural Hall, might be ticketed and ticket information will be announced closer to the date.
Is there anything else you would like to add about the summer festivities that you would like the readers to know?
The Bahrain Summer Festival is an integral part of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities cultural calendar as its mission is to reach families together and offer an atmosphere of learning and enjoyment. We are very happy to see the interest and involvement of the Bahraini community at this festival. Last year alone, we had more than 80,000 visitors including 25,400 children attending the workshops and activities at Nakhool tent. From these interactions, we can better assess how to offer new and varied activities for our attendees.
We would like to thank our generous sponsors and our dedicated volunteers that believe in our vision to bring fun, exciting and educational performances, workshops and activities to our audience! We hope to see everyone on the 7th of July at Nakhool tent by Qal’at al-Bahrain Site and at the Cultural Hall!
