Going from the harsh summer conditions outside to the cold of the air conditioners inside, the sudden change of temperature can really take a toll on your skin. Heavy moisturising mixed with the essential use of sunscreen is the go-to skin care treatment for the summer months. This issue we are going back to our roots and focusing on the age-old practice of using a diverse collection of oils to look after the moisture and nourishment of the body. Available in an endless variety, from Olive oil to Argan oil, the multipurpose functions of oils allow them to be used for numerous beauty purposes.

Olive Oil

Described as “liquid gold”, Olive oil contains Vitamin E that has anti-aging benefits and helps restore the smoothness of the skin as well as protecting it from the Sun’s Ultraviolet rays, thus preventing the skin from premature aging. Olive oil is also great for exfoliation when mixed with natural sea salt, as the scrub removes dead skin cells and leaves the skin looking smooth and glowing.

Coconut Oil

Known to be a “super food”, Coconut oil has a variety of benefits from doubling as sunscreen for hair as well as providing moisture to the scalp, it can also be used for oil pulling. Frequent use of coconut oil results in strong and healthy hair and promotes hair growth. When used for oil pulling, coconut oil helps kill harmful bacteria in the mouth, improves dental health and reduces bad breath.

Tea Tree Oil

Focusing specifically on upset skin, Tea Tree oil can be used to treat acne and can be used on wounds to prevent bacteria. The soothing oil is easily absorbed into the skin and works to disinfect and clear the skin of any bacteria.

Argan Oil

Famous for its Moroccan roots and the wonders it works on the skin, Argan oil is ideal for providing the skin and hair with nourishment and moisture. Argan oil only needs to be applied in a small quantity and locks in the essential nutrients to ensure the skin and hair stays soft and supple even in the harshest of conditions. The versatile oil can also be used to treat skin infections, bug bites and skin rashes with regular use.

Lavender Oil

Popularly known for its calming and relaxing properties, Lavender oil is ideal after a long day. Diluted with a carrier oil (such as almond or olive), Lavender oil can easily be massaged into the body to relieve the muscles and joints from pain. Lavender oil can also be added to hot water before soaking hands and feet to reduce any aches. Also suitable to treat skin conditions such as eczema, the remedying oil also helps form scar tissue which helps in healing wounds, cuts and burns.

Almond Oil

One of the most versatile oils, Almond oil’s multifunction purpose makes it perfect to use for a range of issues. It can be used to treat not only serious skin problems but also helps with re-growth of hair. Almond oil has been known to improve skin conditions and make it healthier by clearing the complexion and retaining a glow. Almond oil has also proven to not only reduce, but also to diminish dark circles upon regular use as well as to lighten dark eyelids and reduce crow’s feet. The quintessential oil can also be used as a makeup remover as it opens pores to make sure all the makeup is removed. The presence of magnesium in Almond oil reduces hair-fall and the essential fatty acids give it high moisturising properties making it suitable to use on dry hair. Almond oil can also be used to get thicker and fuller lashes if applied to eyelashes regularly.
