Equilibrium Pilates Studio
Placing emphasis on health and healthcare activities has seen an immense rise in the past few years. People now consciously make life choices in order to have longer and healthier life, and to ensure that they incorporate healthy eating as well as regular exercise into their routine. Of the many forms of exercise, Pilates is considered to be one of the most effective ways to strengthen the body from the core. It also targets back problems as well as the posture, and increases body mobility and flexibility. Founder of Equilibrium Pilates Studio and highly qualified Pilates instructor, Patricia Kabalaoui, spoke with Perle Magazine about the benefits of doing the exercise regularly and the expert training provided at her facility at the hands of her qualified Pilates instructors.
Patricia’s passion for physical activity started young through her interest in dance and led her to participating in many dance-related activities, and for her higher education she studied Physical Education. Her commitment to fitness led to her certification as a BASI Pilates Instructor in 2008, making her one of only 42 instructors worldwide, followed by receiving her Gyrotonic Instructor certification in 2013, and her BootyBarre instructor certificate in 2015. Receiving her BASI Pilates certification, Patricia says, has been one of her biggest achievements as it allows her to run the BASI Teacher Training program twice a year in Bahrain, where new talent is given the opportunity to become future certified BASI instructors. Patricia attributes her success to her hard work and very strong bond with her mentor, Pilates instructor Rael Isacowitz – founder and CEO of BASI, which is hosted at Equilibrium Pilates Studio – as well as with Tracy Mallet – founder of BootyBarre, in which Patricia has earned the title of Master Instructor.
Starting her journey of teaching Pilates in 2000, Patricia started Pilates classes in Bahrain in 2004 and soon started to garner more attendees, and thus, with the help of her husband, she set up Equilibrium Studio in 2011 in Saar. The success of the studio, unmatched quality of services, and wide range of classes saw the opening of a second branch in 2014 in the Amwaj Lagoon. The facilities offer clients private, semi-private, group mat, and equipment Pilates classes, barre classes, mix equipment, rehabilitation, children/teens/senior yoga, personal fitness training, as well as different therapeutic massages. Of course, the speciality of the studios is Pilates with highly qualified and experienced instructors who have a background in physical therapy or physical education. Patricia herself instructs many classes such as Pre and Post Natal, Advance Pilates, Gyrotonic, Rehabilitation, and fascia release specialities. The studios are designed keeping in mind Patricia’s technical requirements and vision, resulting in a unique, niche vicinity.
The studios deliver on Patricia’s aim to serve the community “and facilitate a platform for this very specialised science and practice to expand and support people in need to maintain or solve their handicaps and areas of injuries” she explains. They are fully equipped with 10 reformers/ Cadillac, spacious mat studio, Gyrotonic studio, and TRX fitness studio, with the constant provision of specialised instructors. The private rooms are also used for various massage therapies, and on site is also present an organic café, which serves a wide selection of healthy snacks, salads, and juices.
The benefits of Pilates, Patricia says, are countless and include a stronger core, better posture and body mechanics, improved flexibility and mobility, corrects imbalance and misalignments in the body, stress relieve, and improved sports performance. She explains that throughout her time as an instructor she has come across many people with back problems related to sitting at a desk for prolonged hours and from travelling often as well.
She adds that though they may not seem like apparent problems initially, over time they can result in major problems in both the posture and the spine. With Pilates, she says, this problem can be corrected and makes a big difference as it restores body mobility and reverses stiffness. Pregnant women, if cleared from their doctors, can also take part in Pilates and has been proven immensely helpful throughout the pregnancy as well for recovery. “The beauty of Pilates is that it is for everybody, regardless of age, injuries, and gender. It is gentle exercise but can be very intense, challenging and demanding as you progress with the program, but actually it will improve the quality of life in general”, says Patricia.
With a team of 4 full-time trainers, Thiago Borgheresi, Rebecca Cornee, Karina Miyashiro and Jane Barrica, and 2 part-time trainers, Equilibrium Pilates Studio is home to around 200-250 clients with classes such as private classes in the rehabilitation area and Bootybarre – which are a combination of Pilates, fitness, yoga, and dance – in high demand. In addition to offering classes to their clients, Equilibrium also offers BASI Teacher-Training courses for those who would like to become Pilates instructors. Offering international BASI certification, the trainees are required to dedicate a full year of effort, followed by years of development and experience to become a well-groomed instructor. The instructors attend special training two or three times a year. Additionally, Equilibrium Pilates studios will also be offering workshops to share knowledge among other instructors and Pilates enthusiasts.
“EQ mission is not to take anything for granted, especially our clients whom entrusted us with their most precious gift, their bodies”, says Patricia. She takes pride in the efforts provided by the professional group of instructors who prioritise the clients’ well being, safety, and health over anything else. “Equilibrium is a studio where our clients share with us a common feeling of being at home and they are part of the EQ family”, she says, and adds, “I continue to be inspired by how much our clients are benefiting from our service.”
