Starting off as a home business in London in 2006, the brainchild of two friends who loved to bake, quickly developed into a successful cupcakes and cakes business in a short span of time. Their enthusiasm towards baking resulted in multiple stores and kiosks across London within the likes of Selfridges, Harrods, Canary Wharf, and more, as well as the surrounding areas. Inspired by the quest to find cupcakes as delicious as the ones they tried from Lola’s and their own love for the treat, The Khalfan sisters, Shaikha, Sharifa, and Nouf, decided to bring the brand to Bahrain, and share their love for the delectable delights with the Kingdom.

Trying the cupcakes for the first time in Selfridges in London, Nouf said they fell in love with the taste of Lola’s and were determined to bring the brand to Bahrain. Launching their Lola’s showroom, located in Umm Al Hassam, in February 2014, the sisters made the Bahrain-branch the first franchise that was based out of the UK. Due to their hard work and dedication to introduce to Bahrain the exciting and rich flavours Lola’s had to offer, the Khalfan sisters were able to successfully give Lola’s a home in the Kingdom.

Offering a wide selection of delicious cupcakes ranging from fruity flavours such as Banana, Passion Fruit, Blueberry, and Strawberry to more chocolaty ones such as Chocolate Milk, Black Bottom, Vanilla Milk Chocolate, Rocky Road and more, Lola’s Cupcakes has something for everyone. These are topped off with either smooth and rich butter cream or cream cheese and garnishing.

The Carrot Cupcake, Nouf says, is one of their best sellers unsurprisingly as it is spongy and aromatic, with cream cheese frosting and walnut on top, which adds a perfect crunch to the pleasantly soft dessert. Sharifa Khalfan, the baker of the family, has also been successful in creating her own Bahraini-inspired flavour, the Kunafa Cupcake, which was introduced two years ago and is now sold in all Lola’s Cupcakes franchises in the UK and abroad. Elevating the sweet offerings in Bahrain, Lola’s Cupcakes also has a deliciously special Milkshake, which is prepared in its own unique way. Popular in the summer, the milkshake is created by blending an actual cupcake of any flavour with milk, resulting in a creamy cold blend that is the perfect balance of drink and dessert.

Excelling in not only cupcakes, but also cakes, Lola’s spectacular ‘Showgirl Cake’ is one of their most exceptional creations. Shaped like a giant cupcake, The Showgirl Cake is made-to-order and can be customised with any flavour and topping. Lola’s cheesecakes have also quickly become one of their best sellers, as the baked desserts have different flavoured butter cream, depending on the flavour of the cheesecake. Working on creating bite-sized versions of the cheesecake, Nouf says they want their customers to enjoy the dessert without it being too heavy, and are looking to introduce it in multiple flavours such as Cookies & Cream, Blueberry, Raspberry, Brownie, and Macadamia Nut.

Ensuring that only the freshest of ingredients are used and that the recipes are followed exactly, Nouf says guarantees that a cupcake from Lola’s in Bahrain will taste exactly the same as a cupcake from the brand in the UK. Doing bi-monthly taste-tests, Nouf explains, whereby they send across a cupcake from Bahrain to the UK to ensure brand consistency is being maintained, also helps keep things in check. Keeping in line with the brand-image, Lola’s showroom in Bahrain, also has the same interiors as that of the shops in the UK, a bright yet serene light blue that is immediately recognisable as Lola’s signature. When a customer walks into the Lola’s shop, whether in Bahrain or abroad, they are experiencing the same high quality, rich-tasting, and visually pleasing tantalising affair.

Catering to all kinds of audiences, especially those with special requirements, Nouf says everything they have to offer can be customised, and as well as creating gluten and egg-free cupcakes, they soon plan to introduce a vegan line. Expanding their menu further, Lola’s Cupcakes has also recently added the customisable mini doughnuts, which are the perfect size to curb a sweet craving instantly. Engaging with their younger customers as well, Lola’s cupcakes also hosts workshops for children that allows them to decorate their own cupcakes in the showroom on a monthly basis.

Currently present in four locations around Bahrain, Lola’s Cupcakes are perfect for everyone, as they offer a scrumptious selection that attracts even those who are not dessert enthusiasts. Lola’s even sells its recipe book, so for those who want to replicate the delectable cupcakes at home, can make their very own.

Importing a little English sweetness to the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Khalfan sisters’ commitment to the brand and love for cupcakes has resulted in Lola’s becoming one of Bahrain’s most recognised cupcake vendors for their spongy and fresh texture, beautiful decoration and tantalizing taste.
