Mettle Fitness Solutions

Mettle: a person’s ability to cope well with difficulties; spirit and resilience, the defining essence of the fitness solutions facility of the same name set up by certified trainers, Yousif Jawad, Bader Taranja, and Mahmood Saeed, who found a common interest in the world of fitness and health and turned it into a personal training facility. Offering a complete personal training experience, from person-based training routine, to tips leading to a healthier lifestyle, Mettle Fitness Solutions is a facility dedicated to ensuring the customers reach their health goals in the most comfortable and dedicated manner. The trainers spoke to Perle Magazine about their unique approach to achieving and maintaining good health for a long period of time.
Starting their careers in the world of finance, Yousif’s, Bader’s and Mahmood’s true passion always lied within different fields of fitness. Yousif’s interest was in boxing, Bader’s in bodybuilding, and Mahmood’s in judo (which also earned him many medals in his participation in judo competitions on a regional level), but the core of their individual regimen was the same: fitness. “We had different interests, but we knew they intersect because in terms of fitness, it is all somehow related”, Yousif explains. Finding the common thread, combined with their passion for the field, and inspiration from motivational speaker, Alan Watts, they decided to go forth and pursue their dream of becoming personal trainers. Taking the brave step to leave their jobs and commit to fitness training wholly, the trainers embarked on a 5-week intensive personal training course from the European Institute of Fitness – Personal Training School, United Kingdom, and upon completion earned their rightful titles as certified personal trainers. Their course included education about posture, human anatomy (the heart, respiratory system), physical training, nutrition, different forms of exercise, and different issues that can arise within the body, as well as behavioural change; all in relation to fitness.
They received qualifications as Master Trainer, EIF Certified Exercise Specialist, EIF Certified Nutrition Coach, and Fitness & Motivation Coach, and returned to Bahrain to set up their own business. After a year and half of planning, gaining work experience at other gyms around Bahrain, and through Tamkeen’s entrepreneurial program, Mettle Fitness Solutions was established in 2016.
Located on the 7th floor of the Capital Plus Tower in the Seef District, the trainers at Mettle encourage and practice bodyweight exercises rather than using machines. “Machines are just mimicking what you can do naturally. Treadmills allow you to walk or run, you can do that on your own! You don’t need a machine to walk. Squatting is the same, it is the movement you do while sitting down and standing up. Our workouts are called ‘functional’ and it is all natural movements”, Yousif says, and adds that they aim to provide a regime that would be helpful in the long-term as well, rather than short-term progress. The walk-in facility allows anyone to come in and request for a personal training program, which will be created especially for them after a thorough interview and analysis of the person’s lifestyle, nutritional habits, and body measurements. Bader says he noticed the trend in Bahrain is that people come to them to be fit, and it is not limited to those who wish to lose weight, but anyone from sports players, those who require rehabilitative care, normal personal training, posture correction, as well as children, adolescents, and even the older population. The trainers add that exercise can also help reverse effects of arthritis and diabetes Type 2, and even blood pressure issues. Mettle also has a highly qualified and certified female trainer, who offers post and pre-natal classes, as well as personal training for women, and mothers with children are more than welcome to leave their kids in the supervised play area located on the female-only section of the gym, while they are exercising.
Crafting a fitness plan that targets all areas of the body and incorporating different types of workouts, the trainers at Mettle offer their clients training using boxing, TRX, weights, and cardio, mostly focusing on functional bodyweight exercises. Before each exercise, the trainers carefully explain and demonstrate before asking the clients to execute them, and are present at all times to ensure the exercises are carried out in the right manner to prevent any injury during the workout. Though they can train up to 4 people at a time, the trainers explain the main focus of their facility is one-on-one training so the clients are get a full hour dedicated to them solely to, guarantee the best results. “In the training class, the numbers are not mass, so we can actually give the time, otherwise we’d be selling them [the clients] short. We could do a class, but the concept here is to be personal – when you are here, we are personally dedicated to you.” Mettle also offers a free trial workout on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4pm-6pm for those who wish to understand how the facility works, before actively starting their training program.
Also working on nutritional coaching, the trainers do not give their clients a diet plan, but rather evaluate their eating habits and try to guide them towards healthier alternatives. “We will see what you eat, and give you better options”, Bader says, and explains that because nutrition habits vary from person to person, a strict diet plan is not the best solution, rather an alternate approach to their existing eating habits can prove to be beneficial in the long run. Yousif says the idea behind them guiding their clients in that manner is because they practice lifestyle change, which means they encourage solutions which fit the needs of the clients instead of altering their diet plans completely.
“We want you to continue practicing that even when you are not in the gym” he says, and adds their advice is something that can be passed on from one person to the family, as it is about making the minor changes that can go a long way. “It is not about going all out once and then crashing after a month, we want you to maintain it.”
For the future, the trainers say they are working on enhancing their outdoor area to incorporate a relaxing area after a workout to cool off, as well as utilise the space for exercises that cannot be carried out indoors. Whether it is for weight loss, weight gain, toning, seeking a healthier lifestyle overall in terms of diet and exercise, Mettle Fitness Solutions is a facility that caters to each person’s needs individually, resulting in a healthier, and more active lifestyle that ensures longevity and an overall feeling of well-being. “This is what we are here for, this is our purpose. Each individual is unique in their own way, and we should practice that uniqueness to help people out.”
