Moments Become Forever

Treasuring your memories is the promise behind the Bahraini greeting card company Sign A Memory, which aims to preserve your special moments in a truly different way.  A change from conventional greeting cards, Sign A Memory cards are designed by owner, Fatima Al Alawi, in Arabic or English to ensure the cards are symbolic mementos for every important occasion.

sign-1aFatima Al Alawi spoke with Perle Magazine about the importance of starting her business and how her cards have become a hit around Bahrain.

Starting her business in 2013, Fatima says it was when her first child was born in 2011, she realised the relevance of receiving the right kind of greeting or congratulatory card to mark special occasions. “I wanted to capture the memories of that day for my son so when he gets older he could show it to his wife and children in the future.  All of the cards I received were in English with English messages inside, but I noticed messages were handwritten in Arabic by my family and friends”, she explains.

Noticing a gap in the market for Arabic-language cards, Fatima sought to create cards that would cater for the English and Arabic language.

Fatima’s greeting cards she says, are more than just a ritualistic notion; they are treasuring memories with family and friends while being able to incorporate her Bahraini heritage into her creations. Staying away from the common Arabic cards available with a lantern or a crescent moon as artwork, Fatima decided to design the cards herself. “I design the whole card; the image, the message and the greeting inside, as though I am the one giving them to my family and friends” she says.

Located in Riyadat Mall, Sign A Memory has cards for occasions such as births, weddings and birthdays. Usually taking around 2-3 days for a card design to be complete from conception to actual tangible product,  Fatima makes sure her cards her ready at least two weeks before any occasion. She is also working to have her cards produced a month before an event in order to ensure her cards reach all her customers on time. Though her idea was unique, Fatima says she faced some challenges when trying to sell her cards to retail stores. The mindset of a locally made product not being up to international standards she says proved to be a hurdle but one she overcame by producing a high quality and truly outstanding product.  Starting out slowly by placing her cards at a few flower shops around Bahrain, Fatima says her cards were being liked and demanded by various businesses. Now, Sign A Memory cards are successfully stocked in Al Jazira Supermarkets, Jashanmal, Singapore Flowers and Sumaya Flowers amongst many other locations around Bahrain.

In the future, Fatima says she hopes to have her own gift shop, which will offer gifts, cards, fresh flowers and gift-wrapping services. She believes all these elements complement each other and makes for a more meaningful gift.

Fatima says that those who wish to follow their dreams and launch their own business should go for it. “If they think that their idea is solid, no matter how hard it is going to be in the beginning, it is worth it”, she says.
