Originating from India, the ancient practice of Yoga has been used for centuries as a physical, mental, and spiritual healing method through movements that focus on breathing and posture. The various yoga postures work different parts of the body to release stress and tension, and especially effective for those who have muscle, joint, and alignment-related issues. Within Yoga, there are many schools of practice and amongst the popular ones are Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Bikram Yoga. Inspired by the style of Bikram Yoga, Pure Yoga brings to Bahrain the first ever hot yoga facility that offers a unique experience in artificially created heated conditions to ensure the body goes through a rejuvenation during each session.
Open to both men and women, Pure Yoga classes take place in studios with monitored heating of 40-43ºC and humidity of 60-90, created through a humidifier, which also releases fresh oxygen. A hot yoga session that lasts around 60 minutes consists of a sequence of 26 postures that works every part of the body without any extraneous elements. Certified trainer, Kim Benting, leads the class and starts with a breathing exercise and then warm up, followed by standing poses that focus on strengthening the legs and firming the thighs and calves. After the standing poses are complete, the session continues on the floor where the postures concentrate on working the abdominals and the internal organs. The last set of postures consists of twisting the body and lengthening the spine, and the session concludes with another breathing exercise before the final Savasana. The Savasana –a resting pose during which the body lies flat on the floor with palms facing upwards – is also done between the floor series postures and serve as a short-rejuvenation for the body, otherwise the session can become too exhausting, Kim explains. Also offering Bikram Yoga at the facility, Kim says the same 26 postures are carried out but are done twice, resulting in 52 postures overall in a span on 90 minutes. The Bikram Yoga, she says, is a more intense practice and encourages those who wish to do it, should start with the hot yoga first and then progress further. In addition to hot and Bikram Yoga, Pure Yoga also offers its customers Hatha Yoga and A Journey Into Yoga classes which look at a combination of breathing, meditation, and posture. Pure Yoga also carries out aerobic classes that specifically target abdominals, legs, and buttocks; Pilates classes that focus on strengthening the core of the body; Zumba classes, and Kids Yoga sessions as well.
Along with aiding the body, de-stress and strengthening and lengthening of the spine for a better posture, Kim explains, the benefits of hot yoga are countless. The movements during the sessions help the body with flexibility, toning, weight loss, and injury prevention all the while rejuvenating the body. The sweating during the sessions also helps with severs illness such as regulation of diabetes, insomnia, and migraine as it promotes complete detoxification from within.
As of the impurities and toxins are sweated out the body, the results can be felt immediately after the session, such as a feeling of lightness, soft and glowing skin, firmer wmuscles, and an overall refreshed feeling.
Director of Pure Yoga, Nada Kazim, a yoga enthusiast herself, explains her interest in the practice of yoga arose three years ago when she was encouraged by friends to try it. She adds, the more she educated herself about the practice, the more passionate she became and dedicated herself to it. “It provides a relief for every person, whether they are adults, teenagers, and even children. Is it especially helpful for those who have ailments such as arthritis and knee injuries, as it has amazing healing abilities,” she says and adds that the effects of doing yoga regularly can be in a matter of weeks.
Classes carried out by six highly qualified trainers are all conducted out in the two studios, one bigger than the other, which have been fitted with the humidifier and can host up to 15-20 persons per session. The facility itself also promotes a welcoming and relaxing environment, akin to that of a spa with large frosted glass windows that allow in ample sunlight, and neutral-toned interior that has a calming effect, allowing the customers to feel comfortable before their class. The spacious waiting area is suitable for members to sit and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee before or after their class, and the ample supply of water and coconut water makes it easy for them to stay hydrated. For those who do not have the yoga equipment, Pure Yoga also provides yoga mats, towels, and suitable attire to ensure a pleasant experience.
As the yoga activities are carried out in hot and humid conditions, Kim strongly advises ample hydration before and after each session by either drinking a lot of water, coconut water, or drinks that aid in electrolyte recovery. She adds that it is recommended to eat a small meal three before class hours, and foods that can be digested easily, as a heavy meal could result in not being able to complete a class.
Being the first of its kind on the island, Pure Yoga offers its customers a truly unique experience through the variety of yoga classes at the hands of experts and the exceptional services provided. For those looking to modify or enhance their fitness routines, Pure Yoga is an ideal place as hot yoga recuperates the entire body through the different postures, resulting in a complete workout without any strain, leaving the person feeling reinvigorated session after session.
