Reaching for the Stars

With Cotton clouds hanging from the ceiling, bright classrooms and the theme of stars; Twinkle Twinkle is the ideal place for every parent looking for a friendly, fun and safe educational environment for their children.
Noor Al Shoala, is the visionary behind the children’s activity centre, and Perle Magazine sat with the Bahraini entrepreneur to learn about her journey so far.
Having received her Bachelors in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies, and later, her Masters in Development Planning, Noor worked with the United Nations in Bahrain as well as in the family business before opening Twinkle Twinkle. It may seem like an unusual career twist but as Noor explained, the amalgam of her education and work experience allowed her to realise that the most essential part in a child’s life is a positive and empowering learning experience. “I would say it’s connected in a way because I think what it comes down to is trying to prepare our children for a better future”.
The children’s activity centre, located in Saar, offers a variety of fun and educational activities in a safe and welcoming environment. The café in the centre allows mothers to enjoy a cup of coffee and stay close by as their children take primary steps towards independence. “I always thought of a place where my son can have a snack and paint and sing and I can also be there”, Noor said of her concept behind the centre. Two years from the initial idea, Twinkle Twinkle was opened in December 2014 and welcomes children from the ages of 0-10. The spacious centre is well equipped for both indoor and outdoor activities, which are carried out by well-trained personnel, and is open from 9am-7pm everyday.
She chose the name Twinkle Twinkle due to her son’s love for the popular children’s nursery rhyme as well as for the reason that stars signify dreams and hopes. “Stars are such a significant symbol to both kids and adults”, Noor explained.
The centre caters to the needs of all mothers and children by offering a wide range of activities from morning till evening. The main activities, for age group 1-7, are arts & crafts, story telling and music as well as other activities such as kids yoga and fitness and a progressive music program called Kindermusik.
To make sure there is always something new and exciting for the kids to do, each Wednesday at Twinkle Twinkle Character Craft is the main theme and children are encouraged to do crafts inspired by a cartoon character.
The music sessions at Twinkle Twinkle are divided into two categories of Kindermusik and the walk-in sessions, Barney’s Favourite Songs and My Favourite Nursery Rhymes. Kindermusik is an international program that runs like a course and is age specific.
Designed by interior designer Mohammad Janahi, the centre is exactly how she said she envisioned it. The blue interior is welcoming with big glass windows allowing in ample sunlight. “I sat with him and I had this idea of stars, dreams, clouds and colours, but to find someone who can take those steps with you and execute what you want, is phenomenal” she said of Janahi’s work. The café boasts an adequate seating facility as well as a small reading section in association with Words Bookstore. Noor also credits her friend and The Workshop Studio owner, Dana Abdulghani, for the brand identity and logo.
Noor’s biggest credit, goes to her father who, she says, is the reason behind her pursuing her dream of setting up Twinkle Twinkle. She explained, while growing up her parents were not only exemplary in what they had achieved throughout their lives but also encouraged their kids to pursue their dreams. It was not just his encouragement towards chasing her dreams that stuck with Noor but also his persistence at being involved in every project from beginning to end. This, Noor said, is a quality she has instilled in her young son as well. “I am happy that my son gets to be a part of the journey. It is very important to me that he is”, she said. “If you come in and see a child wandering around barefoot in and out, that is him, because to him its home”. As for Noor, she said she is happy being able to do something where she is able to work and have her child with her too.
Whether it’s parents wanting to leave their children in safe hands while they are at work, or mothers looking to be a part of their growing child’s activities, Twinkle Twinkle caters to all those needs. Whilst providing a fun, friendly and educational environment for the children, Twinkle Twinkle is also a comfortable and relaxing place for the parents.
