Lush green grass as far as the eye can see at the Kingdom’s only 18-hole championship standard golf course and to a par 3 9-hole course designed by renowned golfing legend and course architect, Colin Montgomerie, and managed by Troon (the leading golf course management company), The Royal Golf Club is an exciting location for all. The enthusiasts of the sport can enjoy spending their mornings and afternoons on the course followed by a nice meal in any of the location’s multiple food outlets, or guests can go for a relaxing afternoon that flows into the evening in the lounges, or even indulge in special evenings hosted by the Royal Golf Club. Director of Food and Beverage and Executive Chef Paul Gindra spoke to Perle Magazine about what the Royal Golf Club has to offer beyond a stunning golf course.

Finding his beginnings in the F&B industry while working at the De Vere Hotel in Southampton, Chef Gindra was drawn to the way the food was prepared and presented and asked to be placed in the kitchen for training, paving the way for him to pursue a culinary career. Doing a two year apprenticeship with De Vere Hotels and two years education from Southampton City College, Chef Paul worked in the UK for two more years before moving back to his native country of South Africa. Gaining further experience working in different countries across Africa, Chef Gindra once again returned to the UK to open up the Radisson Blu property in Dublin, Ireland, before going back to Africa, then making his way to Bahrain.

Creating his signature taste by incorporating all the elements from his culinary experiences and fusing them together, Chef Gindra says he is happy to work with different types of cuisines, and is something he took into consideration while creating the menu for Royal Golf Club’s flagship restaurant, Links. The international cuisine restaurant has a delicious A La Carte menu for breakfast, all-day dining, dinner, dessert, and their newly launched brunch menu with a wide selection of international dishes that cater to the different taste palettes in Bahrain. Ensuring guests start their mornings on a tasty note, the Links breakfast menu offers a wide selection from Club breakfast, a variety of egg options, traditional Bahraini Ful Medames for those who enjoy something savoury for breakfast. For those who like to indulge in sweet treats to start their day, New York-style pancakes, waffles served with either ice cream or whipped cream and with the additional option of adding fruit, nuts, chocolates and more, or the Baker’s basket that includes a selection of pastries and jams is perfect. Also offering a healthy option such as muesli, oatmeal, or a seasonal fruit and berry pot, Links makes sure all customers are able to enjoy their breakfast and begin their day with a nutritious meal. Boasting delectable dishes from seafood, meats, salads, and sides, the dinner menu has dishes such as the smoked salmon and prawn, Peking duck salad, vegetable ravioli and more to start the meal off on a hearty note, and an insight of what is to follow on the mains that provide a large selection of rich steaks, lamb rack, chicken and duck options, and seafood, all of which also allow the guests to select their own sauces.

The menu also has a seafood platter – a specialty of the restaurant – that comes with pilaf rice and lemon and butter sauce. The all-day dining menu offers customers classics with a Links twist such as the Caesar salad, chicken and avocado salad, tuna and quinoa, and more for salads that are also filling enough to be a light meal, and familiar dishes such buttered chicken, club sandwich, gourmet beef burger, fish and chips, braised lamb shank, braised brisket, for example, as mains, with also the option of pasta with a sauce of choice. Becoming a favourite of members and non-members alike, the Links A La Carte Brunch menu is a beautiful combination of favourites from the menu and specials for breakfast, cold selection, main course, house favourites, and dessert. The breakfast offers diners an eclectic selection of sweet and savoury breakfast options, the cold selection is divided into the Mezze Buffet and On The Table that allows diners to choose from a wide selection of vegetarian and meat-based dishes. The Main Course boasts hearty options such as mini crayfish thermidor, braised and de-boned lamb shank, pan-fried seabass, and even a wild mushroom tortellini, for example to make sure every diner has something of their taste they can enjoy. The menu also has House Favourites, which include dishes that have become customer favourites over time. No meal is ever complete without dessert, and the brunch menu offers customers a buffet selection of homemade cakes, tarts, mousses, and pastries or assorted cheese plate and condiments. Chef Gindra has curated the menu in a manner that every diner at Links has a variety of options to choose from, resulting in satisfied customers every time. What makes the experience of dining at Links even more exciting, especially for brunch, is the live music that is played throughout the weekend. “We are really trying to bring some new diverse music concepts here”, Chef Gindra explains for the Friday Brunch, guests enjoy live Jazz music by musician Ahmed Al Qassim, and classical guitarist Thu Le ravishes the guests in her sweet music on special evenings that take place in Links. Coming on board is also musician Paul Adams and a Brazilian Bossanova band to elevate the ambiance and dining experience.

Across from Links, the Royal Golf Club’s lounge Repartee is a cosy place for those looking to unwind on the weekend with nice music, comfortable seating, and a stunning view of the golf course that stretches ahead. Setting the mood for the evening with their music, Paul Adams and Ahmed Al Qassim entertain the guests with their live music in the lounge in the evening, as they relax indoors or on the outdoor terrace area with their beverages of choice and a complementary snack menu. Guests can also enjoy the relaxed ambiance of a lounge in the non-smoking outlet, Hickory’s, where golfers often go after their rounds. The spacious venue also has a glass front that allows in ample sunlight during the day, letting the guests enjoy the lush sights ahead of them, a rich and comfortable interior and a light-dining menu. Guests can also enjoy their breakfast and light lunch at Café T, which is open to members and non-members. The busy coffee shop opens early for breakfast accommodating the golfers and residents of the nearby area and stays open till late evening.

Chef Gindra explains the facilities that the Royal Golf Club has to offer are not only available for members, but are also accessible for non-members. “One of the challenges is that people think that the Royal Golf Club is for members only, and something I really want to promote is that everybody is welcome here,” says Chef Gindra. He explains the poolside venue is an exquisite location for outdoor events and has quickly become a sought after venue for weddings. Chef Gindra explains that the Royal Golf Club also offers a pick up and drop off service for eight people or more from anywhere in Bahrain. The club also has a special venue for indoor events, in a stunning cylindrical tower that also overlooks the rich green golf course.

Also re-launching the diner’s program, Elements Diner’s Club, which has amazing offers for members of the program – who do not necessarily have to be members of the Royal Golf Club – Chef Gindra explains that the 90BD membership covers four complimentary events a year, along with food tasting events and other benefits that include dining  access during Ramadan.

Chef Gindra explains, the future for the Royal Golf Club holds a lot of exciting events and culinary launches that will be taking place to enhance the experience for the customers, as well as revamping the look of a few of the outlets to give a more upscale and modern feel to them. Among the new events coming up, Ladies Night will start taking place, as well as the launch of a new tea and coffee concept.

Whether it is to enjoy a game of golf, or to indulge in the deliciously eclectic dining options at the Royal Golf Club, the extravagant club and its facilities are open to everyone. Chef Gindra’s culinary expertise, leading management skills, and ability to work out of the box has truly driven the Royal Golf Club to success and has made it one of the Kingdom’s most extravagant and popular venues.
