For those of us who do not possess expertise in the field of trading, we still have a general idea of how stock markets work and what their purpose is. However, it is easy to get intimidated by the idea of investing in stocks due to common stories of either striking it big or losing it all.

Fund Manager and Managing Partner of Perpetual Strategic Services, Ahmed Al Massari, and two of his colleagues, Sagar Satikunver and Sayed Shobbair, sat down with Perle Magazine to explain the daunting world of the Stock Market and how they got their start in the industry.

Having lived in Australia for 14 years, Al Massari received his Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from the Queensland University of Technology. Though his educational background is completely unrelated to his career now, Al Massari’s personal journey eventually lead him to his true calling, trading.  After finishing his education, Al Massari moved back to his home country of Saudi Arabia in the hopes to find work but decided to return to Australia to start his career.  Al Massari, decided to take on the first job he was offered, picking strawberries at a farm. “A few times I thought I should just call my family and go back, but I took it as a challenge” he says.  After six months, Al Massari decided to move once again in search for better job prospects.

He was introduced to the world of trading by the landlord of his new residence, and with nothing to lose, Al Massari says, he decided to give it a try. Initially his entry into trading was not easy,  but he did not give up. “I thought to myself what is the difference between me and these traders who are actually making money”, he adds.  After being in the industry for some time, Al Massari got his big break when he was asked to make a speech by the group of traders he had joined, highlighting his journey thus far. His acceptance to make the speech not only helped him overcome his speech impediments, but also introduced him as a notorious trader.

“In this market, your losing trade are more than your winning trade, but your winning trades are bigger than your losing trade. This is how you manage risk”.

At first, he says, he was not taken seriously, but Al Massari proved himself which resulted in the traders investing in him. This not only helped launch his career but also lead him to meet self-made businessman Peter Robson.

Peter Robson’s guidance and the involvement of his son, Luke Robson, with Al Massari’s idea to launch his own company along with two other partners, lead to the creation of Perpetual Worldwide Investments in 2009.

smile-1aHaving received his license under ASIC, the prime clients for Perpetual are those looking to trade in the currency market; the Saudi, American and the Australian stock market and the commodity market. Al Massari explains that after the company was set up he moved to Bahrain in late 2013 and set up his company to work with clients and educate those looking to enter the industry. Al Massari also explained his winning technique, “The Growth Strategy”, a strategy he created in Australia and that has also been implemented throughout his business in the Gulf, ensuring success for him and his clients. Even though his company was sold in Australia in 2014, Al Massari was able to use the skills and business techniques he learnt and implement them in the Gulf and this has  lead to his many triumphs. The company’s “Smile When You Lose” campaign has also garnered huge success as, Al Massari explains, “in this market, your losing trade are more than your winning trade, but your winning trades are bigger than your losing trade. This is how you manage risk”.  His expertise, he says, lies within risk management and thus the campaign was set up.

Psychology,  Al Massari says, also played a huge part in establishing him and the business. During his journey of becoming a skilled trader, he not only went to a psychologist who helped him but also educated himself immensely on the subject so that he may  use it throughout his business strategies. That, he says, was one of the ways he was able to succeed in the Saudi Arabian market. The self-made businessman’s unmatched trading skills in the region also lead him to teaching courses on trading which are open to those who have no background in the industry. His courses cover the know-how of trading mixed with psychology and how that amalgam can help create a successful trader.

Of his challenges faced in the Middle East, Al Massari says it was turning people who have no knowledge of the industry into really good traders. His two employees, Sagar Satikunver and Sayed Shobbair, previously had no knowledge of trading, but now, Al Massari says, “they are the weapons of this company.” Satikunver explains that within two months of joining Perpetual, he has gone from not being knowledgeable about the industry to having a firm grasp of how the different markets work. Shobbair says that though he did know the basics of trading previously, by working in Perpetual he has gotten the opportunity to get a more in-depth idea of how the business works. The unique method by which Al Massari says he selects his employees focuses less on their previous work experience, but more so on the potential candidate’s personality. “Trading is all about psychology. It is all about the hunger and it needs someone who is hungry to succeed.. These guys showed me they had that hunger”, he says.

The hardest part, they explain, is trading people’s money. “The clients are my business”, Al Massari explains, “if they are happy, we are going to be happy. If they are not, then the business will not exist within a year.” However, Shobbair says, every mistake is calculated and therefore that allows them to anticipate any potential losses. “It is all controlled, and everyone who comes to my classes and seminars can understand why it is hard to lose in the Forex Market. It is because of risk management, the strategy that I have built in the last 5 years”, Al Massari says of their approach.

“I believe in one thing, you always share the cake”, Al Massari says and explains how each of his colleagues is not just an employee in the company, but a partner as well. He places emphasis on his company having a family feel which has helped build the name. “Failure is the mother of success” he says, and there is no better person to emulate that than Al Massari himself and his journey to the top.  Starting from nothing, speaks for itself, yet it is through his life experiences that he has become a competent trader.
