The Orangery Tea Room and Patisserie
In a plush garden, with the open skies above, great company, and food, The Orangery Tea Room and Patisserie brings to Bahrain the elegance and sophistication of English tea rooms that are notorious for their luxurious yet comfortable ambiance, delectable mini-bites, and, of course, their teas. Located in The Palace Boutique Hotel, The Orangery Tea Room and Patisserie brings to its customers a combination of European grandeur and a Bahraini charm through its Middle Eastern accented food, lavish indoor and outdoor setting, and their ever-famous Afternoon Tea. Headed by Chef Susy Masetti, one of the Kingdom’s most renowned chefs, The Orangery is the quintessential place for a blissful affair.
A pathway leading to the green arch entrance, The Orangery welcomes its customers with rich greenery into the spacious outdoor seating area on a small porch with steps leading to the seating in the lush garden. The vision of Leila Al Shaker, inspired from the tearooms in the United Kingdom and the vintage-style buildings across Europe, The Orangery is every bit elegant and charming. Focusing on clean and organic eating, the menu is small and simple yet wholesome, and Chef Massetti explains that the vegetables, fruits, and herbs are harvested daily from the restaurant’s own organic garden. Both the locals and expatriates inspire the menu to have a recognisable food taste. With a Middle Eastern accent on the food, without going into traditional Arabic cuisine, the menu at The Orangery presents different culinary elements and ingredients from the Arab and Western world fused together in deliciously satisfying dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The smaller menu and the freshly brought in ingredients allow the chef to experiment with the daily specials and the salads.
Motivated by combining different ingredients and methods to create the dishes, Chef Masseti has expertly reworked conventional dishes to give them her own personal touch. Placing a great emphasis on healthy and clean eating, each ingredient is grown in the most natural ways and handpicked daily. “This is what keeps the menu interesting, because you are playing with all these ingredients and techniques. It gives us chefs the continuous excitement…you have got to have a vehicle for creativity”, the award-winning chef explains. Showcasing her passion for the culinary art and the ease at which she can create the dishes, Chef’s Massetti’s dishes are nothing short of art.
Using the freshest ingredients, the menu has a section of healthy juices that are beneficial for different areas of the body, from the skin to the heart. Drinks such as Berry C Booster is full of antioxidants and rich in Vitamin C, whereas the Apple & Ginger Sweet Zinger drink is ideal for detoxing and weight loss. The delicious juices are a great way to start the meal on refreshing note or can be enjoyed on their own on a warm day to cool off.
The salad bar is an impressive sight as the varieties of mouth-watering salads cater everyone’s dietary needs.
With 10 different salads prepared each day from Sweet Potato with Sweet Chilli, Sweet Onions, and Coriander to Beetroot, Goat cheese, Pomegranate molasses, and Mint, customers can relish in the assortment. The rich flavours in each of the salads complement the different ingredients perfectly to produce a delectable start to the meal.
For those who prefer to eat a small and light meal, the Tidbits and Small Plates has various choices. The Puy Lentils, Spinach, Greek Yoghurt and Labneh Galette in flaky puff pastry is an ideal option, as the stuffing can be eaten by itself as a salad or with the pastry shell, providing a filling meal either way. Not only is the Galette a delicious dish, but also is a good source of iron and protein from the spinach and lentils. The tanginess of the yoghurt and the meatiness of the lentils make it a suitable dish for vegetarians as well.
Finding the common ground between Arabic and Italian cuisine, the Gnocchi in Levantine “Salsa Rosa” is the ideal representation of the familiar flavours. Topped with Parmesan cheese, the soft Gnocchi melt with the tangy Levantine sauce in every bite.
The Lamb Chops at The Orangery are a delight for those who truly enjoy their red meat, without it being too heavy. The lamb is grilled on a charcoal grill, making it crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside.
Using only local fish for the seafood, one of the fish dishes is made using Zubaidi – Chef Massetti’s personal favourite – that is deboned and made into fillet and cooked with the Levantine sauce à la boulangere with potatoes. The divine dish is ideal for the Pescetarians and seafood lovers as it is not a typical seafood dish.
Of course, every restaurant must also have a grilled-cheese sandwich, and at The Orangery, Chef Massetti has transformed the conventional dish into a gourmet meal, served with hand-cut and pickles. Using Halloumi, Kashkaval, and Cheddar cheese on whole wheat bread, the Chef beautifully works in the Arabic flavours into the traditional Western dish.
The perfect way to end a meal, or can be enjoyed on its own, The Orangery’s Afternoon Tea is what really brings to Bahrain the English Elegance. Using the best teas from Sri Lanka, the Afternoon Tea is a delicate experience served in a three-tier stand with mini savoury sandwiches, pastries, and homemade scones with jam. Guests can enjoy the Traditional Afternoon tea, or the Cream Tea, which is served only with the scones and jam and a wide selection of teas.
The bakery at The Orangery not only makes their own exquisite desserts, but also retails them through their in house bakery. Their selection of cakes, macaroons, pastries, homemade chocolates and more is the perfect way to end a meal, or can be enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee in the garden setting.
With years of experience, a true drive, and passion for the culinary arts and a soft spot for Bahrain in her heart, Chef Susy Massetti has brought to Bahrain the finesse and savoir-faire of having a healthy and wholesome meal and enjoying a cup of tea like never before in Bahrain, through The Orangery. Whether it is for a light but filling meal, a quick snack, or a relaxing afternoon spent drinking tea, The Orangery Tea Room and Patisserie is a comfortable place for everyone.
